What does an AI background remover do?

An AI background remover takes the background out of a photo and leaves the subject alone. In Kyndrify you open a picture in the Edit tab and press Remove background. The subject comes back on a transparent PNG you can drop anywhere. Replace background does the opposite: the subject stays and you describe the new setting.

  • Who it is for

Anyone with one picture and the wrong thing behind the subject. Sellers, creators, marketers, and anyone who has been asked for a file on a transparent background.

  • What you need

The picture. A PNG, a JPEG or a WEBP, up to 10 MB. Remove background needs no words at all. Replace background needs one sentence about the setting you want.

  • What it costs

A square removal costs 40 credits on Light, 152 on Standard and 600 on Premium. A wide or tall canvas costs half again as much. Premium is on the Basic plan and above. See what a plan’s credits buy.

  • What it does not do

It does not do a folder at once, and fine detail such as hair, glass or a printed label can drift, so look at the edge before you publish.

Images made on the Free plan carry a small visible mark. It comes off from the Basic plan and above, which matters here more than anywhere else: the whole point of a cutout is that it goes onto something else.

Two ways to deal with a background.

Remove background. The background goes and the subject stays exactly as it was. You get a transparent PNG, so the subject sits on whatever you put it on next: a white listing photo, a coloured slide, a thumbnail, a poster. You do not describe anything here. The action is the instruction.

Replace background. The subject stays and you describe what should be behind it. A plain grey wall, a kitchen counter in morning light, a shelf in a shop. This one comes back solid, never see-through, because a described setting is the point of asking for it.

Pick either one on a picture you just made or a picture you brought with you. Both start from the picture in front of you, so nothing you liked about it gets re-rolled. A clean cutout is also a useful thing to hand a short clip as a reference, which is what freeform does with a picture and a sentence.

How it works

Three steps, and you are done.

  1. 1

    Open the picture.

Bring your own or start from one you made here. It lands in the Edit tab with the actions beside it.

  2. 2

    Press the action.

Remove background asks for nothing. Replace background asks for one sentence. The price sits on the button before you press it, so you know the cost before you spend it.

  3. 3

Look at the edge, then download.

Check the hardest places first: hair, thin handles, anything glass or see-through, any small printed text. If one of them is wrong, fix that one spot rather than starting the whole picture again.

What you can bring, and what you get.

  • Files in

PNG, JPEG or WEBP, up to 10 MB.

  • File out

A PNG. Remove background keeps the transparency; Replace background comes back solid.

  • Shapes

    Square, wide or tall.

  • Quality

Light for trying something, Standard for regular work, Premium for what you publish. Premium is on the Basic plan and above.

One photo, two jobs.

Say you have one usable photo of the thing you sell, taken on a desk that is not doing you any favours.

Remove background gives you the main image: the product on its own, on transparency, ready for whatever plain backdrop the place you are selling asks for. Replace background gives you the second image: the same product on a counter, a table, a shelf, as many settings as you want to try. Same photo, two jobs, and the product does not move between them.

Check the image rules where you sell before you publish, and check the product itself as carefully as you would check a photograph. Printed labels, small type, fine textures and reflective surfaces are the things most likely to shift. If what you actually want is the whole shot staged again, framing and light included, that is a different job and it has its own page: product photos, studio product shots from a photo you already have.

Fix the one spot, not the whole picture.

Sometimes the cut clips something. A strand of hair, the handle of a mug, the gap between an arm and a body. The tempting move is to run it again and hope, which costs another picture and can land a different mistake.

Do this instead. Keep the picture you have and choose Mask an area. Paint over the part that is wrong, say what should be there, and only that part changes. The rest of the picture stays exactly as it was.

The picture stays in the studio the whole time, so fixing one edge is a small change rather than a fresh start.

A photo of a real person needs permission.

If the subject is a person, you need their permission to edit and publish their picture. That is your call to make, not ours, and our acceptable use policy says the same thing in longer words.

If you want to go further and make videos or new pictures of a real person, that is a Digital Twin, and it starts with a consent recording we keep on file. An Avatar is a character we generated, with no real person behind it, and it needs no such record.

Your pictures, your uploads and your results stay with your Workspace, and Kyndrify does not use them to train a Kyndrify model. Built-in AI labelling is still rolling out across output types, so write the disclosure line yourself wherever you publish rather than assuming the file carries it.

Read the biometric notice and how we build responsibly.

What this page does not promise.

  • Fine detail can drift.

Hair, glass, smoke, a thin handle, a label that has to read exactly right. Look at the edge before you publish and redo anything that moved.

  • A free-plan image carries a visible mark.

Images made on the Free plan carry a small visible mark. It comes off from the Basic plan and above. If the cutout is going onto a listing or a client’s slide, that is the plan you want, and it is better to know now than after you download the file.

  • One picture in, one picture out.

There is no folder mode and nothing that runs a set of pictures in one go. Variations is the only action that hands back more than one picture, up to four, and it is not this one.

  • This is not a pixel editor.

There is no eraser, no pen tool, no layers and no nudging a selection by hand. You describe a change, or you paint an area and describe what it should become.

FAQ

Questions people ask before they press.

Do I get a real transparent PNG?
Yes. Remove background hands the subject back as a PNG with the background gone, not as a picture of the subject on a white square. Drop it onto a listing, a slide or a coloured backdrop and nothing comes along with it.
Can I put a new background in instead of taking one out?
Yes. Choose Replace background and describe the setting you want. The subject stays where it is and the result comes back solid rather than see-through, which is what you want when you have asked for a particular backdrop.
What does it cost?
A square removal costs 40 credits on Light, 152 on Standard and 600 on Premium. A wide or tall canvas costs half again as much. Premium is on the Basic plan and above. The Free plan starts you with 8,400 credits that do not expire.
Is there a version I can use without signing in?
No. Kyndrify is a studio you sign in to, and every picture spends credits from your plan. What you get without paying is the Free plan's starter credits, which do not expire. Images made on that plan carry a small visible mark, so a cutout you intend to place somewhere wants a paid plan.
The cut clipped part of my subject. What now?
Keep the same picture and choose Mask an area. Paint over the part that is wrong, say what should be there, and only that part changes. It costs one more edit instead of starting the picture over.
Can I do a folder of photos at once?
Not today. One picture goes in and one picture comes out. If you have twenty product shots to get through, plan on twenty passes, and use the same setting sentence each time so they end up looking like a set.

One picture, one press.

Bring the photo, press Remove background, and look at what comes back. The Free plan starts you with 8,400 credits that do not expire.
